Leadership Turn

Communicating with other teams

by Michelle on April 3rd, 2006

I had an interesting expereince today communicating with another team quite removed from my own in the company.

Me and my team are principally concenred with reputation management and relationships with the community and key stakeholders.

The people I was communicating with were process people focussed on throughputs, targets and dollars.

I quickly realised that this team was barely focussing on me, and couldn’t see what I saw as being a problem as actually being a problem.

It was then that I realised I was talking the wrong language.

I was using the emotive language, sympathy and empathy to win them over.  I should have been using facts, figures and dollars.

As a leader, even during your day to day activities it pays to think about your audience, and who you are dealing with.  It will increase your effectivenes.
