Leadership Thought for the Week: January 8th

January 8, 2007 by Mary Jo Manzanares

You have to have confidence in your ability, and then be tough enough to follow through.
                                    — Rosalyn Carter

This week’s action plan:  It’s easy to believe in yourself, when everyone around you believes in you as well.  But how often is this the case?

Sometimes the people around us are looking to poke holes in our theories, subvert our decisions, and undermine authority.  How easy it is then to question our abilities.

Put a system into place today, so that you have the support you will need tomorrow.  Whether it’s a pep talk that you can give yourself, a series of affirmations for you to read every day, a visualization process where you can see yourself in successful situations, or a group of supportive friends who you can count on to be there for you, surrounding yourself with strategies for shoring up your confidence is only the first step.

Believe in yourself and then act on your beliefs.  Move forward in confidence toward success.

What is your plan for surrounding yourself with a support system?

Some vital thoughts – I guess my support system is a wife who is allowed to critique me (and therefore feels free to support me), prayer, a strong plan I can hold to as a compass, and a bunch of peers in similar business who give me perspective and encouragement.

    Great reminder to “tweak” these!

  2. Hi Pete,

First of all, thanks for taking the time to read and comment.

It sounds like you’ve surrounded yourself with a wonderful support system. You’re one of the lucky ones!

I liked this thought-provoking posting. My plan for strengthening my support system is to continue to reach out to mentors and act in mentoring roles for others. I also continue to be honest with myself and with others so that our interactions are genuine and goal-oriented.
