Leadership Thoughts - On Effective Authority

by Jone Lewis on October 2nd, 2005

From Dwight D. Eisenhower, military general and American president: “You do not lead by hitting people over the head - that’s assault, not leadership.”

Some people in leadership positions (note I don’t describe them as “leaders”) think that strength in leadership means forcing people to do something. But use of blunt force — whether literal or figurative — isn’t effective. As Gen. and Pres. Eisenhower says, it’s assault. A true leader is able to enlist others in the plan, and willing participants are going to be more effective in carrying out the plan than those who are there only because some kind of pain was inflicted on them.

Authority is more than force; power is more than force; leadership is more than force.
