Let Your People Take the Spotlight
October 27, 2006 by Milo Riano
The month of October has been very, very tough for me because of a software project deliverable that was presented to two CEOs from the top technology firms in the world. There were a lot of challenges which include an insane timeline, using technologies that were not yet released until year 2007, limited number of skilled manpower, etc. that saw the team almost burn out to diminishing returns; nevertheless, we found ways to keep key people motivated which greatly contributed to a successful output.
Having worked on the project as a PM, technical lead and programmer, I could have easily taken most of the credit when I presented the application to the top management here before it was shipped for the two CEOs which I did not. Instead, during my presentation I praised the unquestionable talent and quality of work of the team and individually recognized their contribution to the project. I asked them to explain key modules which showed their brilliance to everyone else.
For some reason I felt very happy when I saw my team look so proud and pleased on their contributions. I also felt I gained more respect from my managers and everyone else for giving so much credit to the team. People also thanked me for giving them the visibility and exposure essential for their growth and progression within the organization.
Don’t be greedy and keep the credit for yourself. Remember that giving your members the exposure and opportunity to grow and succeed goes a long way in your leadership progression far better than you realize.
