Leadership Turn

What’s important in executive ranks?

by Miki Saxon on June 3rd, 2008

Post from Leadership Turn

A comment left by Umesh Ramakrishnan, Vice Chairman of CTPartners, on Wes Ball’s post today led me to a survey on CTPartners home page. CTPartners is a global search firm specializing in “C-Suite, top executive, and board searches, as well as private equity and venture capital services.”

The survey question is, “Which is the most important qualification for a CEO today?”

The choices are

  • Operational background (deep knowledge of day-to-day business)
  • Ability to motivate, inspire, retain talent in difficult economy
  • Which is the most important qualification for a CEO today?

Anyone who reads either Leadership Turn or MAPping Company Success knows I voted for the second choice, but based on real world hiring news I certainly didn’t expect these results.

  • Operational background (deep knowledge of day-to-day business) 8.77 %
  • Ability to motivate, inspire, retain talent in difficult economy 77.19 %
  • Global experience 14.04 %

Wow! A far cry from when I started RampUp Solutions a decade ago.

What do you think? Is the attitude in the voting backed up by actions in the hiring arena?
