Who in the world is Amy S. Quinn?

by Miki Saxon on March 3rd, 2008

question_mark.jpgI received and email from Amy S. Quinn suggesting that I would be interested in a posting about Wal-Mart’s in-store clinics—I wasn’t. I assumed she was a flack of some kind and that she sent it because I’ve written several not very complimentary posts Wal-Mart.Here’s the email

Hi Miki,
We just posted an article (title and link deleted)
I thought I’d bring it to your attention just in case you think your readers would find it interesting.
Either way, thanks for your time!

I googled Amy and the results certainly confirmed the flack/spam connection.

Who is Amy S. Quinn?

Is she an enterprising virtual assistant who helps promote stuff? Is she the leading edge of a new PR approach? Is she the blogging fairy, inspiring new posts for bloggers in totally diverse fields?

What do you think? Have you received an email from Amy?

Your comments—priceless

    Miki,

This is very clever spam. I just got this:
    Hi Bruce,

We just posted an article ” The Ultimate Guide to Sales Force Automation: 100-Plus Links and Resources” (link deleted)

I thought I’d bring it to your attention just in case you think your readers would find it interesting.

Bruce, I don’t doubt that it’s spam, but who is Amy? Had another thought beyond what’s in the post. Maybe she’s a bot that can be programed to deliver alerts to hundreds of bloggers based on keywords. Wow, that would be cool technology.

Whadda ya think? Could that be it?

Miki, I think you’re right. Amy the bot!

I just this moment received an identical email to the one you mention in your post, only the link was for gasoline credit cards. In a google search for Amy S. Quinn, yours was the #1 post.

Sherri, cool, I always knew I’d come up number one on some search.

Do you think Amy’s a bot? Any other ideas on who/what is Amy?

    I got the same deal.

    Hi Mary,

We just posted an article “GreenDev: 50 Environmentally Friendly Apps, Hosts and Resources” (link deleted). I thought I’d bring it to your attention just in case you think your readers would find it interesting.

Either way, thanks for your time!

I’ve never thought about who/what sends me spam. Usually I just delete it, but this gave me pause, because it seemed so much like a real email. I sort of think she’s a real person, though that’s probably not her real name. Just a feeling.

I finally realized that the gas-saving blog she sent to me was probably connected to an Al Gore post I wrote several months ago, since I just had a hit on it for the first time since it was written. Clever, indeed.

    Nice to meet you :)

Thanks, Mary. I did take the liberty of deleting the link, no reason to give a spammer a link however I will admit that her spam is more useful than the typical offers we all get:)

Sherri, Nice to meet you, too:) Typically, I don’t even open spam, but, as with you, this one fit in with two previous posts I’d done on Wal-Mart. In fact, as first I thought it was from someone at Wal-Mart looking to counter what I’d written. That’s why I googled her in the first place.

A real person, huh. Possible, but it would have to be more than one considering how many of these are flying around and all tied to previous posts in those blogs.

This is indeed a more clever piece of spam than what usually passes the filters, but what really made me spend some time on the referenced article and other pages on that site is that fact that I have worked with someone named Amy Quinn and was wondering how she ended up selling credit cards to businesses :-)

Klaus, Although I doubt that this Amy Quinn is your colleague, do you vote for Amy-the-person or Amy-the-bot? With your background you must have some idea.

This is not the person I know. Definitely Amy-the-bot.

Klaus, Based on what you do I’ll take your statement as definitive that Amy is a bot.

Hmm, I’m not sure whether to cheer that the spammers are getting creative or cry.
