Women and Leadership
Don’t get the wrong idea. I am not a hairy-legged, man-hating, ball-breaking feminist. But I AM a woman, and what has been going on with Kathy Sierra really got me riled up last night. It sent me on a journey through women’s sites on Google, and for that I am glad.
I have joined BlogHer and have saved several other women’s sites to my favorites. So I guess at least one good thing has come out of this mess, for me anyway. I have found places where I feel that I will fit in and maybe do some good. But I have also been reminded that the struggle for female equality is still very much an ongoing battle.
I thought we had come much farther than this. However, from reading this article at MSNBC.com concerning the results of a survey by Elle Magazine and MSNBC. com, I see that we have not.
Female bosses who were considered attractive were rated competent 58 percent of the time, compared with 23 percent for unattractive supervisors.
WTF? Still, I am not surprised. What else should we expect, when everywhere we look there is an image of a young, half-naked female sending the message that what is important in our society is perfection, beauty, and sex.
But the part of this survey that really got under my skin was it being revealed that the majority of women would rather have a male boss. And you know what bugs me the most? SO WOULD I.
What I am going to say next I said once before on a forum and ended up in an argument with several women. But I am going to say it anyway, for it bears repeating. The last thing I want to do is end up in a dispute. If you read my post at Web Reporter, you will see how I feel about that.
The feminist movement has not become the great success women like Betty Friedman and Gloria Steinman hoped it would be for one reason. We went too far the other way from femininity into the territory of emasculation. What was meant to be progressive change became loud and dominating. We overcompensated. And after reading the results of that survey, I see that we’re still doing it.
Ladies, it is as simple as what my grandma used to say. You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.
